The Comeback

Pictured above is the Jaguar XJ13 which you may have randomly seen photos of online, but chances are the photos you’ve seen were replicas. Why? Because there is only one authentic XJ13 and this is it. 

The car was built in 1966 to bring Jaguar back to Le Mans to compete with Ford and Ferrari but unfortunately the car was completed too late to compete. It had a mid-mounted 5-liter V12 engine so even though it was ready to race in 1967, new ‘3-liter max’ regulations ended the car’s hopes.

During test runs, the XJ13 set new lap records and looked beautiful doing so, until 1971 when being filmed for an E-type press release, the car lost a rear tire and flipped end over end while being driven 140mph by Norman Dewis. Despite not wearing a safety belt, Dewis walked away unharmed, but the car didn’t (see last two photos). Dewis somehow managed to cut the ignition during the crash so no fire broke out.

Unlike so many race cars of the era, the car was saved, repaired, and restored two years later. Jaguar used another engine they had lying around but unfortunately they welded one of the pistons so the car could drive, but not be able to race again.

In 2002, the car fell from a curb cracking the engine block. The bold decision was made to rebuild the engine again but this time it would function the way it was intended, for speed. In 2007, the car debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where it was heard and seen in all its racing glory for the first time in 35 years.

1979 Dome Zero P2

Перед глазами расплываются строчки моего научного шедевра, который я редактирую в пятый (или пятисотый?) раз. Окно нараспашку, теплый воздух, смешанный с запахом сирени, наполняет комнату. За окном - май, и кажется преступлением сидеть дома в этот прекрасный вечер.
На первом курсе нас предупреждали «ребята, не тяните с дипломом до победного». Ребята послушно кивали головами и учились в университете по принципу Скарлетт О’Хары «я подумаю об этом завтра». Зачеты и экзамены, к которым практически никто не готовился проходили по сценарию культового тв-шоу «Остаться в живых». Оставшиеся в живых дошли до финальной стадии - написание диплома. Жизнь стала болью.
Я дошла до двадцатой страницы. Меня ожидают еще семьдесят две. Так же меня ожидают научник и оппонент.
«Корпоративную прессу разделяют по нескольким видам…».
«Катя, я тебя люблю. Выходи за меня замуж!» - доносится протяжно-жалостливое с улицы.
Возвращаюсь к видам корпоративной прессы. Думаю о том, что свое исследование я могла бы провести намного лучше. Другое дело, что это не в моем стиле. Но недоработать материал, потому что полгода играла в приставку - это да. Если честно, мне совсем не стыдно. Более того, мне абсолютно наплевать.
«Катя, ты - моя единственная! Выходи за меня замуж», - повторяется.
Звучит как сигнал S.O.S.
«Катя…».
«Выходи во двор, мы на качелях», - хочется крикнуть мне.
Перечитываю параграф, правлю сноски, редактирую стилистику. Я очень надеюсь на то, что мою работу не будут внимательно читать, что ее вообще не будут читать, что ее даже не откроют: посмотрят на красивый переплет, скажут «ок», и я уйду домой с оценкой в зачетке. Без жертв. Без кровопролития.
«Катя, ты выйдешь за меня?».
Катя, милая, пожалуйста, уже скажи «да». Ну, Катя!
«Катя…», на этот раз позывной прерывается грубым «слышь, че скажу, баклан, не выйдет она за тебя замуж».
Жизнь боль.

with Elio de Angelis having the benefits of the more powerful Lotus 93T which housed Renault’s turbo V6, Nigel Mansell had to make do with the older Lotus 91, still driven by the atmospheric Ford DFV V8
eventually Mansell would get a turbo powered Lotus (94T) as well, half way through the season
Nigel was given the chance to test Lotus’ first attempt at an (re)active suspended car, here tried out at the 1983 Long Beach venue, he wasn’t very successful with the car but the team would go on to test the system on several more occasions during the year

Несколько лет я искала что-то неосмысленное, и в итоге этим днем я обрела все, что хотела эти годы. Здесь, в доме у своих родителей, который я непростительно редко навещала. Символично то, что слово “непростительно” автокоррект исправил на “непочтительно”.
Сегодня я ощутила себя пятилетней девочкой, любившей гулять по саду. Сегодня я взглянула на многие вещи по-другому. Без прежних циничных, немного злых, иногда агрессивных мыслей. Без состояния напряженности, ожидания удара. Спокойно и уверенно. Словно близкий человек, к которому я в детстве прибегала за защитой, положил руку на плечо и крепко сжал его.
